J.R.R. Tolkien, The Annotated Hobbit.
The Annotated Hobbit is a book that gives me a lot of surprises. I have watched its movie before, so one astonishing fact is that significant events in the movies become barely more than a sentence or two at most in the novel. For example, the most important plot in the movie is the haunting of the party. One impressive thing is every single stage of the journey is equally dangerous and mortal since the beginning of the story. However, in this novel, situations become different. Dangers that protagonists face with are less life-threatening. Some of the dangers are just common natural disasters, such as storm and mountain sliding.

The most concentrated part in the book is actually the adventure and the journey. There are a bunch of  in-between moments in the book as well. Not only will the characters face dangers from catastrophic disasters and physical hurt, but also get into internal struggling. They have to overcome dilemma, such as depression, helplessness, discouragement, and doubt. Another surprise is, there are some scenes that are only belonged to the book. It is impossible to find them in the movie. These impressive and mysterious places gives me a lot of whimsical imagination and desire to take an exciting adventure.
